Kilimanjaro with Mt. Meru + Safari

Tanzania at it´s best!

MOUNT MERU 4.566 m

In the Arusha National Park we hike at an easy pace through the varied vegetation of the East African mountains in four days. Our first peaks are Little Mt. Meru (3.800m) and the technically easy but strenuous Mt. Meru (4.566m). Perfect to get used to the altitude.

KILIMANJARO – MACHAME ROUTE

Well acclimatized we start the six day ascent of Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route. In the beginning we hike through the lush vegetation of the mountain forest, which later turns into grassland, before a high alpine landscape and last remnants of snow and ice at the summit shape the landscape. The slightly longer Machame Route offers the best form of altitude acclimatization due to its path, which constantly goes up and down, and therefore the best chances to stand on the peak of 5.895m high Uhuru Peak after 5 days of hiking.

WILDLIFE SAFARI

The last part of this wonderful trip is a 4 day safari to the most beautiful national parks in Africa. We spend the nights in good lodges and visit the Tarangiri and Lake Manyara National Parks, where we have the possibility to see leopards, lions, hippos and a great birdlife, if lady luck is on our side. The highlight of this safari, the Ngorongoro Crater, offers a unique natural spectacle. Elephants, lions, rhinos, zebras, gazelles and antelopes live here side by side like in paradise.

SANSIBAR ISLAND extension possibility

The island of spices, Zanzibar, in the Indian Ocean is ideal as an extension for relaxing and bathing. Enjoy sunny days on the white sandy beach and coral reef. Arab and Indian influences mixed with Swahili lifestyle and architecture await you. Taste a variety of spices and tropical fruits on the local markets.

Day 04: Miriakamba hut – Little Mt. Meru 3.800 m – Saddle hut

Trek: approx. 4 hours (h)/1.100 m altitude difference (ad); hut (B/L/D)

Day 05: Saddle hut – Mt. Meru 4.566 m – Miriakamba
We start our summit ascent already at night. Passing Rhino Point 3.800m first, then descending again we arrive into a small saddle. Here our ascent to the great Mt. Meru begins. After we’ve plenty enjoyed our summit, we descend back to the hut and take some rest there. Afterwards we descend from Saddle Hut and reach cozy Miriakamba hut after about 2 hours of hiking.

 Trek: 6-8h/1. 000m ad; hut (B/L/D)

Day 06: Miriakamba hut – Moshi
Through lush vegetation we return to the gate, where we say goodbye to our helpful porters. They were a valuable help in our ascent. From here the bus takes us back to Moshi. In the early afternoon we check-in at our hotel in Moshi.

 Trek: 2h/1. 000m ad; Hotel (B/L/-)

Day 7 - 12: Ascent Kilimanjaro/Uhuru Peak

 Trek: 4h/1.300m ad; tent (B/L/D)

Day 08: Machame Hat – Shira Plateau 3.800m
After breakfast we go higher and reach a ridge. From here we already have a wonderful view over to Mt. Meru, which we climbed four days ago. In the afternoon we reach our camp at the Shira Plateau. From here we have a fantastic view over the whole plateau and on the enormous south – west abysses of the Kilimanjaro.

 Trek: 3h/850m ad; tent (B/L/D)

Day 09: Shira Plateau – Lava Tower 4.600m – Barranco Camp
In the morning we hike on a glacier moraine towards Western Breach. After approx. 3 h walking time climbers can climb the Lava Tower at 4.600 m. Here we take some rest again to improve our acclimatization and hike through beautiful forests down to the Barranco Camp at 3.950m. The mighty ice falls of the Kilimanjaro and the many beautiful Senetia forests in this valley basin still know how to motivate everyone.

 Trek: 6h; tent (B/L/D)

Day 10: Barranco Camp – Wide valley – Barrafu Camp
After a good breakfast, we first take a trail into the wide valley, where we’ll have again the possibility to improve our acclimatization process. On the east side of the Kilimanjaro the trail goes up and down several times. Passing the last water, we cross a moraine cone and reach the high camp. We move into our camp and start our preparations for the summit day.

 Trek: 6h/1.300m ad; tent (B/L/D)

Day 11: Barrafu Camp – Uhuru Peak 5.896 m – Mweka Camp 3.000m
Already at midnight we start our summit ascent to the highest mountain of Africa. First we walk comfortably into a wide valley. It’s getting steeper here and our strength is being challenged. Suddenly it gets flat again and we walk about 45 minutes to the summit. Overjoyed to have made it we enjoy our big moment at Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Africa. At sunrise there is an impressive view of the ice monument, the Reusch crater and much more in the surroundings of the summit. Afterwards descent to Mweka Camp.

Arrived at the lodge we move into our rooms and enjoy the rest of the day.

 Travel time: 4h; Lodge (B/L/D)

Day 14: Lodge – Ngorongoro National Park
First we visit a Masaii village to get an impression of their lifestyle. Then we travel on to the fascinating Ngorongoro-crater. We descend steeply into this 25 km diameter crater. It seems as if all animals live peacefully side by side: Elephants, lions, hyenas, buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, rhinos, and hundreds of other species… We spend the whole day in this beautiful paradise and return to our lodge in the evening.

Travel time: approx. 3h; Lodge (B/L/D)

Day 15: Lodge – Lake Eyasi
Today we visit the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. They still work with stone tools like in prehistoric times. These Bushmen are threatened with extinction as only 700 indigenous people are left. Lake Eyasi is a real bird paradise and will fascinate us.

 Lodge (B/L/D)

Day 16: Lake Manyara National Park – Kili Airport (JRO) – Flight to Europe
Our last day offers another highlight. After breakfast we start to Lake Manyara National Park. With a little luck we can watch lions, leopards in the trees, giraffes, elephants, hippos and flamingos. info  General

Tour operator for this trip: Furtenbach Adventures.

An expedition to high altitudes still presents an enormous challenge despite modern equipment and tactics. Besides technical and fitness requirements, the high altitude still poses the largest hurdle. That is why we place great emphasis on prudent, slow acclimatization (see also FAQ).

Weather and conditions on the mountain can lead to program or route changes. Participation in trekking lies in your own individual responsibility. Furtenbach Adventures assumes no liability for accidents, damages or loss of materials.

This package in general is not suitable for persons with reduced mobility.

Please note that tipping the team at Kilimanjaro is normal and expected. Due to the many necessary team members, the amount of tips is usually higher than for other treks. When booking the tour you will receive more detailed information and guidelines. For the 7-day Machame-Trek, depending on the number of participants, tips of 300 – 450 US$ per person should be calculated.

perm_identity  Physical fitness

A key success factor in expeditions is being in good shape. In the weeks before the trekking you should start with frequent training to get used to walking for several hours and familiarize yourself with your equipment and hiking shoes.

local_hospital  Health

We recommend that each participant undergoes a medical examination prior to the expedition. Good health is a prerequisite for participation. Particularly important is a visit to the dentist because previously unnoticed dental problems can become quite acute due to the sudden change in pressure conditions in higher altitudes.

landscape  Experience

We are very familiar with the charm and attraction of an eight-thousander! However, we want to make certain that you can ascend safely, come back alive, and be able to enjoy the expedition while on it and not afterwards. Therefore, in order to participate in our eight-thousander expeditions, you must already have collected some experience at high altitudes and mountaineering. When booking, please let us know which heights you have already reached and which high mountains you have climbed. If you are a newcomer, no problem, we offer a bespoke program aimed to train you for reaching your desired destination.

In order to participate in our seven-and six-thousander expeditions, you should have at least some experience on the four-thousander peaks of the Alps or other mountain ranges. Our offer for newcomers applies here as well, we can train you to become prudent and safe high altitude climbers!

We offer a special introductory weekend for all those who want to learn about – or refresh their knowledge of – all the skills and techniques needed on an expedition. More info here.
