Extraordinary trekking in the country with Gross National Happiness

Kingdom of Bhutan - the land of the Thunder Dragon is certainly one of the most exclusive and exciting trekking destinations worldwide. Bhutan is mysterious and legendary, with a rich cultural and spiritual heritage like no other Himalayan state. The government defies all conventions of globalized tourism and has a regulatory grip on the development of tourism. This increases the attraction even more and gives this wonderful and fascinating country a very unique aura. Our Bhutan travel is a peaceful experience for people who want to get involved with a country, its people and its nature. The Chomolhari Trek is considered the finest and most unusual in Bhutan and one of the most varied and most pristine of the entire Himalayas. The trek is combined with a cultural program. A balanced mix of trekking and culture where diverse nature and vegetation meets spectacular scenery, where religious places and interesting people encourage cultural exchange. There will be time to absorb the country and experiences, but also time to process the impressions and to take a break from our busy and overloaded everyday lives. You can get a little bit closer to your inner self on this impressive journey. Bhutan can be reached most conveniently via Kathmandu in Nepal. And here is where our journey begins. After our return from Bhutan, we will still have the opportunity to explore, shop or be inspired for the next adventure by the many climbers and the very special atmosphere of this multi-cultural Himalayan city…

Following schedule is planned:
Day 1: Arrival and meet-up at the hotel in Kathmandu

Day 2: Flight from Kathmandu to Paro, past 6 six-thousanders and a spectacular panorama. Upon arrival the strict formalities have to be taken care of. Participants have time to get to know the city. Overnight stay in a mid-range hotel.

Day 3: After breakfast, we head on a 2-3 hour hike through pine forests to Bhutan’s most famous monastery and photo motive, the Taktsang monastery. The monastery is perched like an eagle’s nest upon an 800m high granite cliff above the Paro valley. Afterwards we return back to the hotel.

Day 4: Transfer to Drugyel Dzong, where our Trekking Tour begins. On this day we will hike along the Pachu river up to an altitude of 2800m, where we will set up camp. Duration of 5-6 hrs.

Day 5: We continue along the river, through beatiful pine and oak forests, until we reach our next camp at 3800m. Duration of 6-7 hrs.

Day 6: It will be a relaxing day that starts off with a visit to a camp of yak shepherds located above the tree line. We will eat lunch here. Afterwards we’ll continue towards Camp Jangothang at 4050m. From here we can enjoy spectacular views of the Chomolhari (7320m) and Jichu Drake (6900m) peaks. Duration of 4-5 hrs.

Day 7: A day of rest for acclimatization. You are welcome to go trout fishing in nearby lake Tshophu, watch the yak shepherds, or just lie in the grass and relax.

Day 8: Past the impressive "forbidden" mountains, the valley opens up and with a little luck we can catch a glimpse of the rare blue sheep. We cross the 4700 m high but uncomplicated Nyele pass with spectacular views and reach our camp on the other side at 4100m, below the Linshi Dzong monastery. Duration of 6-7 hrs.

Day 9: Today will be the most exhausting day, so we need to get off to an early start. A steep climb up to the Yale pass at 4950m takes us to the highest point of the trek. Again, we enjoy a breathtaking panorama. From the pass we descend to 3750m where our next camp lies. Duration of 7-8 hrs.

Day 10: Through beautiful rhodendron forests, we descend along the Thimchu river. Near the ruins of the Barshong monastery we reach our camp with a short ascent to 3500m. Duration of 5-6 hrs.

Day 11: We continue down the valley along the river through bamboo and pine forests. After approximately 7 hrs we reach Dodina, where we will be picked up by the Shuttle and driven to the capital of Thimphu. Overnight stay at a mid-range hotel.

Day 12: The morning is at your free disposal at the Thimphu market, in the afternoon the shuttle will take us to Paro (approx. 1.5hrs) for some sightseeing. Overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 13: Return flight to Kathmandu, a free day in Kathmandu.

Day 14: Kathmandu

Day 15: Return flight or subsequent program in Nepal

General
Weather and conditions on the mountain can lead to program or route changes. Participation in Heliskiing / Ski Touring lies in your own individual responsibility. Furtenbach Adventures assumes no liability for accidents, damages or loss of materials.
If you are not sure whether taking part in an certain trip is the right thing for you, feel free to contact Lukas Furtenbach at Tel +43 512 204134 or per emaillukas@furtenbachadventures.com for an answer to this question during a personal interview!

This package in general is not suitable for persons with reduced mobility.

Difficulty / Technique
Heliskiing / Ski Touring always lies in the participant‘s personal responsibility, while led by the mountain guide. Participants must be able to move safely and independently in different snow conditions and steep terrain. For Ski Touring members should be able to perform kick-turns. The guide is there to provide guidance for the whole group, the possibilities for him to respond to individual needs is limited. It is imperative that participants adhere to the instructions and decisions made by the mountain guide. Regardless, each participant must know their own physical limits, and be able to make a timely decision to turn back.

Physical fitness
A key success factor in ski touring trips is being in good shape. Train in the months before the trip! Several hour climbs with a backpack and around 1000 meters per day should not be a problem for you. You have to carry your own personal equipment on the mountain. We will gladly provide individual advice on how to best prepare yourself mentally and physically for an expedition!

Equipment
Unless specified otherwise in the detailled program you need to bring your own personal ski / skki touring and safety equipment. We will be happy to advise you personally during the selection and purchase of required equipment. With years of expedition experience, we know what has proved its worth and what not.

Health
We recommend that each participant undergoes a medical examination prior to the expedition. Good health is a prerequisite for participation. Particularly important is a visit to the dentist because previously unnoticed dental problems can become quite acute due to the sudden change in pressure conditions in higher altitudes.
