Planned itinerary:

1. Day: Longyearbyen
Individual travel to Longyearbyen. Transfer from the airport to the cruise ship. Until embarkation, you will some spare time available, which you can use to explore Longyearbyen, the “capital” and administrative center of Spitsbergen. The harbor is ice-free throughout the year. The most important source of income for the locals is the mining industry, which is why you will find various mines at the mountain sides bordering the city. A small museum gives you an impression on the history, flora and fauna of Spitsbergen. In the evening, we are departing. “Cast of, full steam!”

2.-7. Day: Ski & Sail
In the course of the travel on our comfortable three-mast schooner SV Rembrandt Van Rijn, we will explore the impressive wide regions of Kongsfjorden, Isfjord and Prins Karls Forland. The experienced crew will inform you about wildlife, plants and geography of the Arctic. Additionally, there will be excursions onshore and ski tours every day (if the weather conditions allow it) to the most beautiful places and peaks of Spitsbergen, of course accompanied by our certified UIAGM mountain guide. The schedule of a typical day consists of ski touring with ascents to mountains with an average hight of 700-850 m and runs in an open rough terrain (the actual cumulated vertical meters can exceed 1000 m over the course of a day). An exact routing of the ship and the ski tours cannot be determined in advance. Weather, sea disturbances and possible avalanche hazard will define the final course of the program in order to use the conditions as good as possible.

perm_identity  Physical Fitness

A key success factor in expeditions is being in good shape. Train in the months before the expedition! Several hour climbs with a backpack and around 1000 meters per day should not be a problem for you. You have to carry your own personal equipment on the mountain.

local_hospital  Health

We recommend that each participant undergoes a medical examination prior to the expedition. Good health is a prerequisite for participation. Particularly important is a visit to the dentist because previously unnoticed dental problems can become quite acute due to the sudden change in pressure conditions in higher altitudes.

insert_chart_outlined  Difficulty/ Technique

Ski Touring always lies in the participant‘s personal responsibility, while led by the mountain guide. Participants must be able to move safely and independently in different snow conditions and steep terrain. For Ski Touring members should be able to perform kick-turns. The guide is there to provide guidance for the whole group, the possibilities for him to respond to individual needs is limited. It is imperative that participants adhere to the instructions and decisions made by the mountain guide. Regardless, each participant must know their own physical limits, and be able to make a timely decision to turn back.

Note of the tour operator

Willingness to compromise on comfort is a basic requirement on board a historic sailing vessel. Important information about the sailing program: The boat is equipped with sails to be used in good conditions (based on open sea, water depth, wind, and time). This is not guaranteed. The captain decides whether to use the sails or the engine. There is no claim to one or the other propulsion method. If sails are used, the crew operates them. Guests follow the safety instructions of the team. Average cruising speed for s/v Rembrandt van Rijn is 6.5 knots.

Deposit Payment is made less than eleven months prior to the end of the trip and is a maximum of 20% of the price. The balance must be paid 60 days prior to departure. Please find more information regarding the payment in the GTC of the tour operator.
