The roof of America. Temple of the Incas

The Aconcagua with its 6962 m, is the highest mountain of the American continent and one of the Seven Summits.

From the natives referred to as “The Stone Sentinel”, rises in the west of Argentina in the province of Mendoza. He is also part of the Andean mountain chain that separates Argentina and Chile and is surrounded by beauteous landscape.

But its significance is not just of geographical and historical nature: The Incas, the most powerfull of the Andean dwellers, considered the Aconcagua as temple which is demonstrated by the abundance of art pieces, religious items and even mumies found that show a relation to the mountain.

Relatively early, the Aconcagua became also relevant in mountaineering: In 1882 the first expedition to the so called “Roof of America” was launched and until today, the Aconcagua is a popular target for mountaineers and adventurers from all over the world. Especially its relative technical simplicity paired with its high altitude of almost 7000 m, makes the Aconcagua a perfect preparation mountain for the easier 8000ers of the Himalaya.

It is quite busy at the Roof of America. But for those who can refrain from its well-trodden paths and wander its thoughts over the unending expanses of the Andes, the Aconcagua hasn’t lost much of its appeal and beauty that must have already compelled the Incas.

This expedition is characterized by two particularities: instead of starting the acclimatization process with the ascent of the Aconcagua, we begin with climbing another mountain, Mt. Vallecitos (5500 m). This offers several benefits: our guests have the opportunity to climb one more beautiful and significant mountain of the Andean region and achieve better acclimatization due to a slow and steady ascent which will increase the chance of reaching the summit significantly.

Furthermore we provide plenty of mountain guides which means one guide is responsible for 3-4 group members in order to be able to care individually for each participant.

With these specialties we hope to offer maximum joy and pleasure on the Roof of America.

The following schedule is planned:

Day 1: Arrival at Mendoza Airport, transfer to the hotel, get together with the mountain guides and other participants, mutual briefing of the exact sequence of the upcoming days. In the evening a typical Argentinian welcome dinner.

Day 2: In the morning we receive the permit for Aconcagua National park. In the afternoon we arrive at the Vallecitos hut.

Day 3: Ascent to the “Piedra Grande” Camp (Big Stone, 3800 m), where we set up our tents for the night.

Day 4: Today, we are climbing two summits at 4300 m, a perfect altitude for acclimatization. From both peaks, we have a fantastic view on the “La Plata” mountain range. The night we are going to spend at 3800 m.

Day 5: We are ascending to the Camp “El Salto” at 4.200 m. From here we begin our ascent to the Vallecitos circuit. The circuit is formed by several mountains, the Mt. Rincón (5200 m), Mt. Adolfo Calle (4300 m), Mt. Lomas Amarillas (5100 m) and others. From our camp we have a great view on the Mendoza river and in the night you can even see the lights of the city of Mendoza.

Day 6: Break-day at camp El Salto, simple hiking for further acclimatization and to save energy.

Day 7: We ascent to the Plata Vallecitos ridge, from here we have an impressive view to Mt. Aconcagua. From here it is only 2 more hours to the Vallecitos summit. After climbing the summit, we descend again to Camp El Salto.

Day 8: Back to Vallecitos Hut where we have lunch and have time to rest. Overnight in the hut.

Day 9: In the morning, we take a small bus to Penitentes. We take a rest and regain our strength.

Day 10: A minibus takes us to Horcones, from there we ascent to our first camp, Concfluencia (3300 m). It is only a few hours to the camp where a welcome snack awaits us, followed by a joint dinner.

Day 11: Approximately 8 hours Trekking to the base camp called Plaza de Mullas at 4370 m. Our luggage will be carried by mules, we will only carry small backpacks. At the camp we are going to have dinner in the big communal tent.

Day 12: Break-day at the camp.

Day 13: We ascent to Camp 1 called Cambio de pendiente (5150 m), here we set up our tents and spend the night. From here on we are going to carry our complete equipment in order to achieve maximum acclimatization.

Day 14: Break-day Camp 1, simple hiking to Camp 2, Nido de Condores (5450 m) for further acclimatization. We spend the night in Camp 1.

Day 15: We ascent to Camp 3, Berlin (5950 m). It can take up to 5 hours, since the last part of th ascent is quite steep. In camp Berlin we will have dinner early and try get enough rest for the Summit day.

Day 16: From Camp 3 we ascent to the Summit and from there back again to Camp 3. A long, challenging but wonderful day awaits us.

Day 17: Reserve day

Day18: We descent for 1550 m to Plaza de Mulas hut where our well-deserved dinner awaits us.

Day 19: After breakfast, we prepare the luggage for our mule, they are going to facilitate our final descent. At the park entrance, our transfer awaits us and will bring us back to the hotel in Mendoza.

Day 20: Transfer from the hotel to the airport and individual departure.

An expedition to high altitudes still presents an enormous challenge despite modern equipment and tactics. Besides technical and fitness requirements, the high altitude still poses the largest hurdle. That is why we place great emphasis on prudent, slow acclimatization.
Weather and conditions on the mountain can lead to program or route changes. Participation in the expedition lies in your own individual responsibility. Furtenbach Adventures assumes no liability for accidents, damages or loss of materials.
If you are not sure whether taking part in an expedition is the right thing for you, feel free to contact Lukas Furtenbach at Tel +43 512 204134 or per for an answer to this question during a personal interview!

This package in general is not suitable for persons with reduced mobility.

Difficulty / Technique
The ascent always lies in the participant‘s personal responsibility, while led by the mountain guide and expedition leader. Participants must be able to move safely and independently in mixed terrain (rock, snow, ice) and – if required – independently build rope teams under the guidance of the mountain guide. Cooperation, camaraderie and support on the mountain increases the chances of success for all. The guide is there to provide guidance for the whole group, the possibilities for him to respond to individual needs is limited. It is imperative that participants adhere to the instructions and decisions made by the mountain guide. Regardless, each participant must know their own physical limits, and be able to make a timely decision to turn back.

Physical fitness
A key success factor in expeditions is being in good shape. Train in the months before the expedition! Several hour climbs with a backpack and around 1000 meters per day should not be a problem for you. We will gladly provide individual advice on how to best prepare yourself mentally and physically for an expedition!

You need to bring your own personal equipment. Following your booking we will send you a detailed equipment list. We will be happy to advise you personally during the selection and purchase of required equipment. With years of expedition experience, we know what has proved its worth and what not.

We recommend that each participant undergoes a medical examination prior to the expedition. Good health is a prerequisite for participation. Particularly important is a visit to the dentist because previously unnoticed dental problems can become quite acute due to the sudden change in pressure conditions in higher altitudes.

We are very familiar with the charm and attraction of a high mountain! However, we want to make certain that you can ascend safely, come back alive, and be able to enjoy the expedition while on it and not afterwards. Therefore, in order to participate in one of our Seven Summit expeditions, you must already have collected some experience at high altitudes and mountaineering. When booking, please let us know which heights you have already reached and which high mountains you have climbed. If you are a newcomer, no problem, we offer a bespoke program aimed to train you for reaching your desired destination.

We offer a special introductory weekend for all those who want to learn about - or refresh their knowledge of - all the skills and techniques needed on an expedition. More info here.
